Breton Boats

CURATOR'S TIP: Jan Zrzavý is regarded as one of the most important figures of Czech modern art, and his works are represented in the collections of the National Gallery Prague as well as numerous prestigious European institutions. Brittany was among his most significant sources of inspiration, and coastal landscapes became one of the defining themes of his artistic legacy. Created in 1963, Breton Boats is an authentic example of the artist’s late period, characterized by exceptional purity of expression and poetic simplicity. The composition depicts two small boats resting on a tranquil shoreline, conveying a sense of calm, contemplation and timeless beauty. Executed in coloured pencil on paper, the work demonstrates Zrzavý’s remarkable sensitivity to line, rhythm and colour harmony. The delicate balance between the cool blue tones of sea and sky and the warm sandy foreground creates the distinctive atmosphere associated with the artist’s Breton subjects. The artwork is signed and dated 1963. Authenticity has been confirmed by art historian PhDr. Zachař and the expert report accompanies the lot. The work originates from an important private Prague collection acquired through inheritance and remains preserved in excellent condition, including its original framing.
